Clinical Comments on Lab Orders

Last updated: April 16, 2026

Overview

You can now add clinical comments directly to lab orders.

This allows providers to include additional context for the lab at the time of ordering — a standard part of many clinical workflows and often required for certain use cases and certifications.

How It Works

When creating a lab order (via API or Dashboard), you can include an optional clinical comment.

This comment is:

  • Sent along with the lab order

  • Visible to the lab during processing

  • Intended for provider-to-lab communication

Supported Labs

Clinical comments are currently supported for:

  • Quest

  • Labcorp

  • BioReference

  • Sonora Quest

If a comment is submitted for an unsupported lab, an error will be returned.

When to Use Clinical Comments

Use clinical comments when you need to:

  • Provide additional clinical context for a test

  • Clarify ordering intent

  • Support lab-specific requirements

  • Meet certification or compliance workflows

Dashboard Experience

In the Dashboard, you’ll see a Clinical Comments field during order creation, in the last step. This field is optional

API Usage

Clinical comments can also be included when creating an order via the API.

Refer to the API documentation for the exact request format.
